Shelby R. Black is a proud father and devoted husband, who learned the value of hard work and a sense of strong community, raised on a farm in Stewart County, Tennessee. His parents, a commercial farmer and a high school teacher, were the greatest influences in his life. His mother inspired his love of reading, ultimately leading him to become a Lawyer.
Shelby is a 2013 graduate of Austin Peay State University, Sum Cum Laude. With his strong work ethic, he continued to work his way through college, whether it be farm work, restaurant work, running documents for businesses, or mowing yards. After graduation, he moved on to University of Tennessee College of Law in 2017, became a moot court team member, learned to love college football, and earned his Juris Doctorate.
Shelby joined the United States Navy, serving from 2017 to 2023 as an assistant Judge Advocate General (JAG), stateside and abroad. He performed many duties as a JAG, including criminal prosecution for sex offenses, other violent crimes, a Hospital attorney, a Command Judge Advocate for Naval Air Station Lemoore and the Navy Strike Fighter squadrons. He also assisted servicemembers with civil litigation, including divorce and child custody issues.
Once leaving active duty in 2023, he transitioned to working for the Social Security Administration. He worked over a thousand disability claims with many favorable outcomes, essentially improving the quality of life of his clients. Although his active-duty time has ended, he is still a current member of the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving as a Lieutenant Commander (O-4).
